MY EXPERIENCE TEACHING IN CHINA
By Gonzalo Lucky
The first time I taught in China all I did was comparing it with my own experience when, ten years ago, I was teaching in a High School in Spain.
The first thing that caught my attention was that, generally speaking, Chinese students are more respectful than Spanish students. I barely have to raise my voice or ask the students to be quiet. It’s a good thing that mobile phones are not allowed (that’s a great idea) because in Spain other teachers told me that it’s a nightmare as the students are just checking their phones instead of paying attention. Also, I enjoy the activities that they have in our school. In Spain there is not such things as Art class, singing or speech contest.
On the other hand, it bothers me when I see that some students are doing homework or even sleeping in class, in my country this is a very high fault and a big offense to the teacher. If you sleep in a class in Spain you are in big trouble, you can even get spelled from school for it!!
In any case, I am always learning about the best way to get everyone involved in class and I always learn new things being an excellent experience so far!!
